Air vibrating, airplane sound. Throughout the day, we hear sound, feel vibration, thousands, ten-thousands. Little tableaux: a vibrating string, bird call, bodies resonating. Waiting, listening. Shells, metal, clinking, cutlery – a vibrating fork. Tuning forks tune a string to an impeded ratio, vibration to a point. Tuning forks find the break in bones, pain to the point where the vibration spills.
Splinters trembling. Click, beep. Collecting a vibration, one minute each day for one month. Sharing days as we alternate. A thought quivering. Insect-like clicks, soothing texture, tones wavering, lips wobbling, breath-force, a diaphragm squeezed. Listening in. Synthetic, to twang. Dripping and filtering. What vibrates – air – material – bird body – string. Active sense. Searching and waiting. String resonance, metered but human. A further twang. Keys flow like a concourse of water. Then chunky.
A pitch trembles, not quite here nor there. Thick air shimmering. A note encased, small worlds, subtle rhythms. Resonant space – a saucepan, a hall, inside a shell, tambourine body, a reflective mall: shiny and bouncy, the inside of a wooden clarinet bell. Hall, shell, mall, bell. A twig gets caught between a shoe and the earth. A compositional element came through the exchange. Water boiling two eggs, egg bodies tapping out a rhythm together. Hot inertia. Jiggling hydrogen atoms while cooking breakfast. Quiet, subdued space – a small stage filled with jostling.
A rehearsal, a room sound, depth of space, and depth of sound. Voices up front side, piano back centre. Big to small, many to few, always the air moving – tickling ears. Vibrations spiralling. Two types of listening enforcing and informing each other.
Metronome, long tones, new practice, old instrument. A loud breath, equal tempered. One merging into the other, an LFO, psychoacoustic. Chordal – a piano body vibrating. Vibration like a thread – moving through egg bodies, cat bodies, piano bodies, bell bodies, human bodies… connecting, leaving traces. Breath flowing into string into water into fingers, outside to the passing birds, to feet hitting the pavement, feet moving along a path, next to water flowing down a creek bed. Cat to paper.
A cat purrs, rattles, vibrates. A shoe buckle emits a small rattle against the squeaky leather. Hard sole thump, ground crunch, human meter. Pitch moving with surface material, finger on a page.
Collecting sound to inform meaning. Rubbing. Lungs… “trying to”… vibrate as they ebb and fill. A large metal chamber. The building moving too, barely perceptible, felt through feet, a twitching floor with the ring. A number of almost the same vibrations occurring.
Gravel and a mouth talking to the animals. Whisper your actions. Our tests of vibration. A rock struck in the palm, fingers as filter, releasing smaller, higher vibrations. Bouncing as the hands open. A clap held in the hand, a small chamber. Air vibrating against palm, fingers slap – place a bounce in the air, mobilise the air particles.
A close friendship also plays out. Fade to outside ambience, domestic duties, different spaces for sound to rattle and bounce in. Birds mimic children. Cat speaks to human. What is a sound of vibration if all vibration is sound?
